Dr. Enrique C. Leira serves as aProfessor in Vascular Neurology at the University of Iowa. Graduate of Universidad de Santiago in Spain with an MD and holding an MS in Epidemiology from the University of Iowa, Dr. Leira is a Board-certified Vascular Neurologist and a seasoned epidemiologist. He spearheads the Comprehensive Stroke Center at the University of Iowa, notably enhancing the inclusion of rural patients in NIH stroke trials through innovative community engagement strategies.

Dr. Leira’s research has been transformative in acute stroke care and clinical trial methods, particularly through the pioneering AIRDOC trial, which leveraged air medical crews for delivering interventions during inter-hospital transfers. His work emphasizes cerebroprotection, notably with uric acid, and addresses rural disparities in stroke care, significantly improving access for underserved communities. Recognized as one of the Best Doctors in America, Dr. Leira holds influential positions within the American Board of Psychiatry and Neurology, the American Heart Association, and the American Academy of Neurology.
